Stanford Tour 6/8/2014 Day 2 Group 2

Three goals we would like to achieve on the trip

1. We would like to explore Stanford University in depth, because Stanford University is one of the most esteemed universities in the world.
2. We would like to acquire knowledge about science because we all study science subjects. Moreover, we feel fascinated visiting the laboratories.
3. We would like to be more independent and learn to respect each other on this trip. This is a good opportunity for us to grow mentally and psychologically in all aspects.

  Today was our second day in Stanford University. The lessons have started from today and we had classes about neuroscience and evolutionary biology. 

 The lesson on neuroscience was really interesting and we learned a lot. Neuroscience is all about the nervous system. We first had an introduction on the nervous system and some structures of the brain. We also learned how the signals travel between neurons. After the break, we were taught about the history of microscopy and histology. We were introduced to many scientists, in which the most important ones are Camillo Golgi and Santiago Ramon y Cajal. Golgi found a method to stain the neurons which is using silver nitrate and the black reaction occurred. However, he insisted to believe in the Reticular Theory, while Ramon y Cajal used the method found by Golgi and proved that Reticular Theory was wrong. 

  After our lunch at the dining hall, we headed to the next class, which is evolutionary biology. During the class, we knew more about DNA and genes. We learned about the double helix structure of DNA and the four base pairs which form the secret code of our bodies. We also figured out the reasons why there was no Jurassic Park in the modern society. Moreover, we learned about how to study the DNA.

  At last, we had a campus tour around Stanford. We took a lot of photos around the famous spots in Stanford.  We were very amazed by the beauty of the campus, especially the Memorial Church. We also had a great time taking photos with the funny statues in the Statues Garden.
