We had lessons about intuitive problem solving and
imagining the future, critiquing the present. In the lesson of intuitive
problem solving, we had a lot of interactive activities and illusion experiments,
which allow us to understand deeper by using ourselves as ‘lab rats’. We watched inspiring video clips of a successful
swimmer Philip Phelps and an aspiring dancer Martha Graham, instead of using
traditional training methods, they tried in their styles and obtained brilliant
results. What we have learnt is one thing to have in mind is: think far out of the
box. Be outrageous. Be illogical. Be nonsensical. These are all methods that we
have never thought of using. The class brought out the idea of “practice makes
perfect’. We understand that there is no free lunch and effort must be paid in
exchange for success. In the afternoon, we had a class on western history. To
our dismay, this isn't any normal history lesson that we can easily come
across. The professor reassured us the purpose of studying past events which is
to learn from errors while imitating the hard work of our past generations. We
ended the day with an assignment of painting places we would like to visit in
both the Stanford campus and in any parts of the world. In a nutshell, we had a
wonderful day of acquiring skills of different fields and it was definitely
time well spent.
