A week has passed since we arrived in Stanford. The days are long but they pass so quickly, it's remarkable how time flies when you're having fun.
We had a writing workshop session in the morning. Doctor Conrad Scott-Curtis is a humorous and caring teacher, he told us stories about his son as an example of one's thought process while free-writing. We learned how to write a successful personal statement essay and apply for the university of our choice. We were also taught some basic and general writing techniques, concrete detail in particular because it gives the piece of writing more glamour and elegance and the reader can create that object you described in their minds.
A similar journalism workshop was held in the afternoon. Our teacher, Professor Regina Arnold had a lot of credibility since she had a PhD in Literature. She taught us about the art form of persuasion - rhetoric.Aristotle believed that there are three fundamental elements to persuasion: ethos, pathos and logos. We also had to list out colors that no one else thought of, one of our group mates took up a lot of the vocabulary written down. We also discussed how advertisements succeed/fail at persuading consumers to buy their products. It was a great day and our English writing skills improved a lot.
Then, we proceeded to go shopping at the Stanford Shopping Center.Apparently the trip to one of the largest malls in the world yesterday was not enough for the restless youths in our group. One person form our group was still pretty exhausted and hungover from the fanatic purchasing adventures in Union Square.
In the end of the day, we had a surprise birthday party for two of our students. we had cake, ice cream and condiments galore, our councilors even prepared two birthday cards for them. We had a great time and we do sincerely wish them a happy birthday.
