15/8/2014 Day 11 Group 2

15/8/2014 Day 11

This morning, we visited the Digital Anatomy Laboratory of Stanford University. We were very excited about it as we have never seen nor touched any parts of a corpse before. After putting on the gloves, we held some body organs in our hands, for example, heart, lungs, hands, etc. Some parts of them are rather soft and it was really amazing. Also, we tried out some new technology machineries about anatomy. Through them, we can easily identify and know about the different dissected body parts of our bodies, they are very useful indeed. Visiting the laboratory was absolutely an unforgettable and fascinating experience in life as we may not have the chance to study medical science in the future.
In the afternoon, we had a mathematics lesson. We learnt about probability, in particular the conditional probability through exploring the Bayes’ Theorem.  At the beginning, it was a bit complicated for us but after a while, we start to understand how the theorems and proofs work and eventually we succeeded to solve other problems by ourselves. The learning process was a bit challenging for us but still we were curious to acquire new knowledge. We felt very contented when we could finally come up with the correct answer to the problem.  Also, through the problems and the Bayes’ Theorem, we have learnt that why our intuition may not be reliable and how our intuition misleads us to think in the wrong way sometimes. It was a great time for us to work out difficult problems and we were happy to learn the Bayes’ Theorem.

We are anticipating for tomorrow’s visit to the Aquarium but sadly we’ll have to leave Stanford in three days!
Marshmallows!
