US Constitutional Law is a new subject to most of us. This is an opportunity for us to decide whether we want to continue and develop our studies in law thus giving us a taste of what it would feel like to go to law school. The lecture started off gingerly as most of us were new to the Socrates method and were unsure whether to speak up or not. During the break, one of our councilors decided to slightly intervene and remind us that we are actually encouraged to raise questions and challenge the teacher. It also helps that we had a more interactive activity after the lesson break - debate. We got very into the debate on whether the honorable Congresspeople should pass the bill on stopping minors (people under 18) from buying popular video game Grand Theft Auto. We were all very much in character and enthusiastic which (pleasantly) surprised the teacher since we were so sullen and rather forlorn in the first half of the lecture. We all left the room feeling proud of ourselves.
Our after lunch session was AI (Artificial Intelligence). Throughout this entire lecture, we were enthralled by the topic as the teacher was about the age of our councilors so she was more easy to communicate with. She was still a student and she was doing a PhD in Computer Sciences. She showed us her resume and we were all deeply impressed with her analysis of video games. It was one of the more 'intriguing' lessons as we got to learn about computer coding and we were also shown some very fascinating online games. We loved the lesson so much we HAD to take a group photo with our teacher after the end of the lesson.
We had a cultural exchange with several other houses. They had students from Hong Kong, Taipei, Singapore and Chile and we all performed something for everyone to enjoy. Our house from the Columbae Residence did a Chinese/Korean dance and some percussion with chopsticks. We were quite tense because, after all, we had only learned the whole routine some 15 minutes ago but everything turned out great. The other Hong Kong group sang one of the Golden Classics - Under the Lion Rock. After listening to their wonderful performance, we went inside the spacious house and sat down to watch two videos that the students from Taipei prepared for us. They sang 'The Heartbeat of Taiwan' and educated us all on the geographical location, landmarks and history of their beloved homeland. After the entertainment program has ended, all of us got in line for our clustered dinner. We had Thai food with well-seasoned flavors which danced off our tongues like nymphs on a forest floor.
Some of us went out our way to visit the Stanford bookstore. Sadly, it was closed by the minute we got there and some of us went to get Starbucks while some marched back to our residence gloomily for a shower.
The events of this day marked our progress in class as we have definitely opened up more and one step closer to becoming one with the Stanford Community.
Signing off. Cathy. {Gloria, Joyce, Hailey, Claire}
